Quartz and compact laminate are the most durable kitchen worktop materials for Irish installations. Quartz offers excellent scratch, heat and impact resistance with a non-porous surface requiring no sealing. Compact laminate provides similar durability with a fully waterproof core suitable for undermount sink installations. Laminate worktops remain the most cost-effective specification, with modern Italian Marble, Urban Stone and Wood finish collections delivering premium aesthetics at a lower price point. For guidance on which sinks work with which worktop materials, see our kitchen sinks and taps guide.

Worktop installation requires careful planning. All cut edges in laminate worktops must be sealed to prevent moisture ingress. Undermount sink cutouts are only suitable for solid surface, compact laminate or quartz — our kitchen sinks and taps guide covers which sink types work with each worktop material.
Quartz and compact laminate are the most durable kitchen worktop materials. Quartz offers excellent scratch, heat and impact resistance with a non-porous surface that requires no sealing. Compact laminate provides similar durability with a fully waterproof core, making it suitable for undermount sink installations and wet areas.
Compact laminate is a high-density panel manufactured from multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with thermosetting resins, pressed under high pressure and temperature. The result is a solid through-body material with a fully waterproof core, suitable for undermount sink installations and commercial applications.
Laminate, compact laminate, solid surface, quartz and all decorative finish worktops do not require sealing — their surfaces are non-porous. Solid timber worktops require oiling every 3-6 months. All laminate cut edges must be sealed with waterproof sealant during installation.
The laminate surface itself is waterproof, but the chipboard core is not. Exposed core at cutouts is vulnerable to moisture ingress. All cut edges must be sealed during installation. Laminate worktops are not suitable for undermount sink installations.
